This teaching is on Ephesians 5:18. From one dumb stupid sheep, to other not so dumb sheep. 😉
“See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. 18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; 19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; 21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God” (Eph 5:15-21).
As Matthew Henry said re this word Methusko (or drunk). “Drunkenness is a sin that never goes alone, but carries men into other evils; it is a sin very provoking to God. The drunkard holds out to his family, and to the world the sad spectacle of a sinner hardened beyond what is common, and hastening to perdition.”
“Consider the tyranny of it. This inordinate lusting, it doth never rest satisfied; serve it once, it will call again and again; and if it be not followed to the end, resteth as much displeased as if it had at the first been denied, yea, it giveth no rest to the thought; but when the mind would be sequestered for other purpose, then will these matters be running in it, a bondage worse than the Egyptian… When the cup is in thy hand, fear lest the wrath of God go with it, as it is said, ‘while the meat was in their mouths, the wrath of God came upon them.” – Paul Baynes the “Radical Puritan” (page 332 of his commentary on Ephesians 5:18a).
“It is the inlet and sluice to all other sins, and by them to the Devil.” – John Trapp
“Churches are called “sanctuaries” because our local churches used to be a ‘place of refuge or safety.’ But today a majority of “sanctuaries” are no longer safe, and have become spiritual stumbling blocks.” – Me
