What is blasphemy?
The Bible warns of many types of blasphemy or ways to be blasphemous. Including but not limited to.
This can be the Noun as blasphemia (βλασφημία, S. 988) or blasphemeo (βλασφημέω, S. 987). Or the Adjective blasphemos (βλάσφημος, S. 989). Or the Verb blasphēmeo (βλασφημέω, S. 987).
In a general sense, 100% of mankind are guilty of blasphemy (Ex. 20:7 & Jas. 2:10).
So, what is blasphemy?
If I were to define blasphemy, in summary, it would be this. Blasphemy is taking or using God’s name in vain or using His name inappropriately. It is also a lack of fear, trust, due regard, and reverence for God. Or a wrong attitude of Theology (the study of God), and Theology proper (the character of God). And/or a disregard for sound Doctrine.
The blasphemers who are chosen, elected, and pardoned by God (like me) will be forgiven of all their sins. But the unpardonable sin is that of those who blaspheme the Holy Ghost. They were never chosen to be pardoned, but to destruction.
Oh, how guilty I am of this capital crime of blasphemy. Only by God’s sovereign grace am I a forgiven former blasphemer. His saving Gospel is the power of God onto salvation. This is Good News for His elect. More about that here or below.
